A Partnership Is FormedWith her expertise and knowledge of the music world, Kathy wrote news articles, did interviews with radio stations, and assisted in so many other ways to get this adventure off the ground! The symphony was advertised in the local media including radio, television, and newspapers. Band directors in the area were contacted and registrations were sent in from the local schools. Although many students had previous commitments for the first semester, response was tremendous and enthusiasm was high. Mr. Beard was working with students who had varying degrees of experience. Some were in their first year of playing and others were State Gold Medal winners. Mentors from area communities asked if they could come play with the students, contributing even further to our growth. Our first concert was held May 31, 2003 in the Three Lakes School Auditorium. 32 musicians played selections from Bach, Tschaikovsky, Kabalivsky, Haydn and The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Weber. The concert was a great success. Students from 11 years old to 76 years young participated. Some of the audience had even come from as far away as Appleton, Wisconsin. The concert received a standing ovation. |
