| Here
is the beginning of a new 'Cello
These
images illustrate the way the back, the table, and the ribs look
at an early stage in the construction. |
|
As you can see,
the halves of the back and table have been planed and glued, and the
ribs are still very thick and unshaped. |
|
As construction
proceeds we will be posting additional images. Check back often! |
|
This is the basic
mold, with blocks in place, standing beside the soon-to-be neck block
and a portion of the aged spruce used for top, bottom, and corner
blocks. |
|
When this wood
sleeps, it dreams of becoming a 'Cello neck. It has now been squared
and flattened, and is marked out awaiting the bandsaw cutting that
will begin the process of making it into a neck. |
|
This view of
the head shows that some sawing and carving have been taking place.
The trick is to remove everything that does not look like a 'Cello
head! |
|
Another view
of the head, with even more wood removed from the cheeks of the pegbox. |
|
The ribs, shown
earlier, were 2.5mm thick. After some work, they are just over 1mm,
and almost ready to bend onto the mold. A penny is shown between two
of the ribs to give you an idea of the scale, and actual thickness. |

This view, while
not a new 'Cello, shows the color and shading on a violin recently
made in our shop. |
